Silence- The Ornament

To speak on silence is difficult. I am trying to speak the unspeakable. No doubt silence is good. Not only good, it is like gold. I remember, when I was child my father used to say, “short-speaking is silver and silent is gold”. Actually, there are two worlds. One, the world of words, concepts, languages, philosophies; and second the world of silence. Both are diametrically opposite to each other. Silence means a state of wordlessness. However, both ways you can communicate. Moreover, the messages conveyed through silence have greater impact. In silence, basically, souls convey with each other; giver and receiver is consciousness. But it is so difficult to communicate through silence; because the people don’t hear it, they don’t listen. They can’t understand it; it is beyond them. You will be failed. You will not be able to convey what you are carrying with you. Yes, it is difficult, almost impossible to convey thoughts in words because this is the experience of wordless state of mind. How to convert that silence into sound? There seems to be no way and there is none. You are utterly blissful, but the world is full of misery. There is lack of communion. When people don’t not need words to understand you is- the state of communion. Communication is through words, and communion is through silence. I agree, silence is the best way of conversation. Yes it is possible to communicate through silence; but with the right person, and at the right time, and for the right purpose, and in the right way, that is not within everybody's power, that is not easy, that is not always possible. And on the other hand, communication through words is difficult. Yes, words are not enough. Neither persons nor languages are perfect. Words are open to be misquoted. Communication through words is great danger. You need to be cautious, more alarmed. You had to be selective, careful, choosy, alert, vigilant, controlled, commandant, comprehensive, smart and diplomatic. But you had to speak so that people could understand you; or take risk to lose yourself in the darkness of the world. Nobody have time to listen your silence. Keep pace with changing environment. While speaking, remember that you are refuting an unrefutable proposition. Silence is not irrelevant, neither it was nor it will be.

There are few saying. Wise person’s words on silence:

  • To keep silent when you can say something wise and useful is as bad as to keep on propagating foolish and unwise thoughts.
  • Do not speak in a state of ignorance.
  • The tongue of a wise man lies behind his heart.
  • Wise man first thinks and then speaks and a fool speaks first and then thinks.
  • Fool's mind is at the mercy of his tongue and a wise man's tongue is under the control of his mind.
  • Silence is the best reply to a fool.
  • He who does not know how to be silent will not know how to speak.
  • Silence is argument carried out by other means.
  • Silence is often misinterpreted, but never misquoted.
  • Even a fish wouldn't get into trouble if it kept its mouth shut.
  • Words are a heavy thing...they weigh you down. If birds talked, they couldn't fly.
  • From the fullness of the heart, the mouth speaks.
  • Spiteful words can hurt your feelings but silence breaks your heart.
  • There are times when silence has the loudest voice.
  • Do not speak unless you can improve the silence.
  • Silence is the true friend that never betrays.
  • We must have reasons for speech but we need none for silence.
  • Silence is a fence around wisdom.
  • When money speaks, the truth is silent.
  • Silence is a text easy to misread.
  • Silences make the real conversations between friends. Not the saying but the never needing to say is what counts.
  • We need to find God, and he cannot be found in noise and restlessness. God is the friend of silence. See how nature - trees, flowers, grass- grows in silence; see the stars, the moon and the sun, how they move in silence... We need silence to be able to touch souls.
